Dear Parents,
Happy Valentine’s Day! Thank you all for the sweet treats today! Yum. We had a great time at our Valentine’s Day party today. Thank you to the parents that organized it. Great job! I am late in getting this news out to you, but Fourth grade won the Catholic Schools Week Door Decorating Contest. As our reward, we get an out of uniform. We will have our Out of Uniform day on Tuesday, February 18th. Students may dress however they wish, as long as it is school and weather appropriate. Please remember that Crocs are not allowed in school, even on out of uniform days. We have begun our novel study of Bud, Not Buddy. It is wonderfully written book that does deal with some serious issues. Students, so far, have been really absorbed by the story. We are also working on our opinion essay about who was the better president, Abraham Lincoln or George Washington. We are finishing our African American biographies, as well. We have also begun identifying and understanding how to use Figurative Language in our writing and identifying it in our reading. Today, we explored similes and metaphors. Other types of examples of figurative language that we will be studying will be Idioms, Personification, Alliteration, Onomat0poeia, and hyperbole. In Math, we are multiplying fractions. In Science, we are learning about climate, and how it affects the Earth. In Religion, we continue to learn and grow as Christians and how we can share the kindness and love to others.
ASSIGNMENTS: As part of our routine, students write assignments that are posted on the board at the beginning of the day, the first thing they do. Sometimes they may need to change them throughout the day, but the first thing they are supposed to do is fill out their planner. From now on, I will be checking planners sporadically. Your student is expected to fill out their planner accurately and every day. Please check at home to see if this is actually happening, and if not, please let me know. Every Monday, two iXL assignments in math, 4th grade level, and two iXL assignments in language arts, 4th grade level, are assigned and are due the following Monday. Please note that because students have one week to complete their assignments, late assignments will not be accepted. I-Ready homework is also assigned on Mondays. Students must complete and pass two math lessons and two reading lessons each week by Friday. They cannot make them up the following week. Assignments from that week will not be credited the following week. Math workbook pages must be completed and in school the following day. Late work will not be accepted. Reading logs are due on Mondays and are due the following Monday. Math Fact Fluency logs will also be due on Mondays and are due the following Monday. If a student does not have homework, a missing homework receipt is sent home. Please sign this receipt and return it the following day. Test corrections are allowed for half credit. They must be made and turned in the following day. They will not be accepted after that. All tests must be signed and returned the following day. They will usually have a stamp on them.
Uniforms
As a reminder, please make sure your student is in compliance with the school’s uniform policy.
Please dress for recess!
We go outside when it is very cold, up to 20 degrees. While it is warm now, it will not stay that way. Please make sure your student is warm enough for outdoor play. Dress him/her in layers, including a hat, gloves, and scarves, if necessary. Thank you.
