Dear Parents,
Can you believe that we are fully into February? This week we studied The Great Depression. We listened to a podcast about the historical impacts and events leading up to it and resulted because of it. We listened to music from that genre and examined primary source materials in the form of historical photographs. We are developing our background knowledge in preparation for our next novel, Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. We will begin the novel next week. I think the students will really enjoy it. We also are working on our African-American Biographies and will be taking a virtual field trip to China to celebrate Chinese New Year, albeit a little late… In science, we continue deciding if the Groundhog is correct in its predictions. In Math we worked on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and fractions. In Religion, we worked on how to be better members of our community and discussed what it means to connect to others and treat each other with human dignity. We also had confession yesterday.
Valentine’s Day Part- We will have our Valentine’s Day party on Friday, February 14th. Thank you to the room parents and volunteers that are working on hosting a party in our classroom. Students may wear red, pink or any Valentine them clothes. There are 16 students in our classroom, so please bring a treat for each student. Please do not address the treats to individual students. It makes passing out a little easier. Also, we do have food allergies in the classroom so please be sure keep that in mind.
ASSIGNMENTS: As part of our routine, students write assignments that are posted on the board at the beginning of the day, the first thing they do. Sometimes they may need to change them throughout the day, but the first thing they are supposed to do is fill out their planner. From now on, I will be checking planners sporadically. Your student is expected to fill out their planner accurately and every day. Please check at home to see if this is actually happening, and if not, please let me know. Every Monday, two iXL assignments in math, 4th grade level, and two iXL assignments in language arts, 4th grade level, are assigned and are due the following Monday. Please note that because students have one week to complete their assignments, late assignments will not be accepted. I-Ready homework is also assigned on Mondays. Students must complete and pass two math lessons and two reading lessons each week by Friday. They cannot make them up the following week. Assignments from that week will not be credited the following week. Math workbook pages must be completed and in school the following day. Late work will not be accepted. Reading logs are due on Mondays and are due the following Monday. Math Fact Fluency logs will also be due on Mondays and are due the following Monday. If a student does not have homework, a missing homework receipt is sent home. Please sign this receipt and return it the following day. Test corrections are allowed for half credit. They must be made and turned in the following day. They will not be accepted after that. All tests must be signed and returned the following day. They will usually have a stamp on them.
Uniforms
As a reminder, please make sure your student is in compliance with the school’s uniform policy.
Please dress for recess!
We go outside when it is very cold, up to 20 degrees. While it is warm now, it will not stay that way. Please make sure your student is warm enough for outdoor play. Dress him/her in layers, including a hat, gloves, and scarves, if necessary. Thank you.
